The sub-categories under the 'Deserters and Absentees....' heading e.g. 'From Her Majesty's Service', or 'Discharged for Misconduct', 'Army Reserve' etc. For 'Men Reported as DESERTERS OR ABSENTEES who have REJOINED or who for any other reason, are NOT to be Apprehended' please enter Men Not to be Apprehended

Given in the 1st column of data under the sub-category heading

1.2.4. Surname

Arranged in alphabetical order in the 2nd column of data, please extract the Surname from the Name column

1.2.5. Forename

Arranged in alphabetical order in the 2nd column of data, please extract the Forename from the Name column

Any alias name given

1.2.7. Regiment/Rating No

When given, please enter exactly as shown - leave blank if no number is given

When given - either Army regiment, Royal Marines division or Admiralty ship name - please enter exactly as shown - leave blank if no regiment is given

When given, please enter fractions as 1/2, 1/4, 3/4 - examples are 18 1/4, 20 1/4, etc. Leave blank if no age is give

When given under 'Parish and County in which Born' - leave blank if no data is given. If an asterisk * is given, this indicates there is extra text that has been unable to fit into the allocated space, and should continue further along the row - please add the extra text but not the *.
